URGENT repairs to the damaged roof of a Greenock church have been given the green light after Inverclyde Council planners gave their permission.

Repair work can now commence on the three flat roofs over the Lady Chapel, the Sacristy/Sacred Heart Chapel and the choir loft at the Category-A listed St Laurence's Church on Kilmacolm Road.

Several of the original rooflights at the back of the church are beyond repair and permission had also been requested to replace them.

Planners had indicated that the roof repairs didn't require statutory consent, but approval was needed for the lights to be replaced.
